Purwakarta - Sleep is a basic human need that is physiological. Sleep is a state in which a person's awareness of something goes down, but brain activity still plays an extraordinary role in regulating the functions of the body's organs in playing their roles, such as regulating digestive function, heart activity and blood vessel activity, as well as immune function in providing energy to the body. body, including the storage, organization, and reading of information stored in the brain, as well as the acquisition of post-awake information from sleep.

Basically, during sleep you will go through several cycles. Well, a sleep cycle consists of several stages. Generally, there are four stages of sleep, namely one stage of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep and three stages of non-REM sleep

The following are the stages of the sleep cycle that we must know, to get the benefits of optimal sleep:

Stage 1 Non-REM (Falling Asleep)
This stage when the eyes begin to close, there is a change from being fully aware to the stage of sleep. This stage lasts 5-15 minutes. At this stage a person is still easy to wake up from sleep. At this stage a person begins to experience a decrease in body activity when the pulse, breath, and eye movements slow down, and muscle relaxation occurs, sometimes there is occasional twitching in some parts of the body.

Deep sleep occurs when brain waves are at their slowest during sleep. Therefore, apart from deep sleep, this non-REM stage 3 is also known as slow-wave sleep. At this stage, the heart rate, breathing rate, and brain activity waves will decrease to the lowest point and the muscles will be completely relaxed.

Deep sleep is very important for the body's metabolic processes, including hormone regulation and growth processes. Not only that, good sleep is very important to process new memories to the brain. No wonder when you experience insomnia that does not go away, you are at risk for memory problems.

However, you need to understand that this stage will decrease with age. When you're younger than 30, you'll probably get two hours of good sleep every night. However, once you're over 65, you'll only get about half an hour of good sleep each night.

Stage 4 REM Sleep
REM sleep (sleep with rapid eye movement) English: rapid eye movement sleep is a normal condition of sleep characterized by rapid and random movements of the eyes. REM sleep is classified into two categories: tonic and phasic. - Wikipedia.

This stage occurs about 90 minutes after a person begins to sleep. At this stage the eyes will move quickly from side to side when the eyes are closed. Breathing becomes more increased and irregular, pulse and blood pressure increase near the conscious level. At this stage dreams can appear, when the brain becomes more active. The muscles of the arms and legs may experience temporary paralysis (weakness) to prevent active movement while a person is dreaming. REM stimulates areas of the brain that help a person in the learning process. As we age, REM sleep decreases. A baby can spend 50% of his sleep in the REM phase. While adults can spend 20% of their sleep time for the REM phase.
