Stage 1 Non-REM (Falling Asleep)

At this stage a person begins to experience a decrease in body activity when the pulse, breath, and eye movements slow down, and muscle relaxation occurs, sometimes there is occasional twitching in some parts of the body.

The muscles of the arms and legs may experience temporary paralysis (weakness) to prevent active movement while a person is dreaming. REM stimulates areas of the brain that help a person in the learning process. As we age, REM sleep decreases. A baby can spend 50% of his sleep in the REM phase. While adults can spend 20% of their sleep time for the REM phase.
